From Field to Bottle: How Fragrance Is Actually Made
The journey from raw botanical material to finished perfume is longer, more technical, and more artisanal than most people realise.
## The Raw Materials
Every fragrance begins with raw materials — natural or synthetic, or (in almost all cases) both. Natural materials come from plants, resins, woods, and historically animals. Synthetic materials are created in a laboratory, often replicating naturally occurring molecules or creating entirely new ones.
A complex fragrance may contain 50–200 individual ingredients.
## Extraction Methods for Natural Materials
**Steam distillation** — The oldest and most common method. Plant material is placed in a still; steam passes through and carries volatile aromatic molecules with it. When the steam cools, the aromatic oil separates from the water. Used for most essential oils: lavender, rose, peppermint, frankincense.
**Cold pressing (expression)** — Used for citrus peels. The peel is mechanically pressed and the oil collected. Simple, effective, produces the most "natural" citrus character.
**Solvent extraction** — Plant material is washed with a solvent (hexane) which dissolves the aromatic molecules. The solvent is then removed, leaving a waxy material called a concrete. The concrete is then washed with alcohol to produce an absolute. Used for jasmine, rose, tuberose — flowers too delicate for steam distillation.
**Enfleurage** — An ancient method: flower petals are pressed into fat, which absorbs the fragrance. Now rarely used commercially due to cost, but still practised artisanally.
**CO₂ extraction** — Modern technique using supercritical CO₂ as a solvent. Produces highly accurate, fresh-smelling extracts.
## The Perfumer's Work
Once raw materials are secured, the perfumer — called "the nose" — works at a perfumer's organ: a large curved bench holding dozens or hundreds of raw materials, each labelled, each memorised. The process of composing a fragrance is iterative: small amounts of each material are combined, evaluated on a blotter and on skin, adjusted, re-evaluated.
A single fragrance may go through hundreds of iterations over months or years before it is considered finished.
## From Formula to Production
Once the formula is approved, it is scaled up — from a 10ml test batch to thousands of litres of concentrate. The concentrate is dissolved in pharmaceutical-grade alcohol, rested (sometimes for weeks, allowing the ingredients to marry), filtered, and filled into bottles.
