How to Store Your Perfume Properly
Heat, light, and air are your fragrance's worst enemies. Here is how to preserve your collection for years.
## Why Storage Matters
A quality fragrance is a complex chemical structure. Improper storage accelerates oxidation, which breaks down the aromatic molecules and fundamentally alters the scent — often turning a beautiful perfume harsh, flat, or sour.
## The Three Enemies
**Heat** — Never store perfume near radiators, on sunny windowsills, or in bathrooms where showers create temperature swings. Heat breaks down fragrance molecules rapidly.
**Light** — UV radiation is devastating to perfume. Keep bottles away from direct sunlight. Dark, opaque bottles exist for exactly this reason.
**Air** — Oxygen degrades fragrance over time. Always keep caps on. Decant into smaller bottles when the original is running low to reduce air exposure.
## The Ideal Environment
A cool, dark drawer or wardrobe shelf is ideal. A dedicated fragrance cabinet away from humidity is even better. Some collectors store unopened bottles in a dedicated refrigerator — though this is not necessary for most collections.
## Shelf Life
Most quality fragrances last 3–5 years unopened, and 1–3 years once opened. Oriental and woody fragrances often improve with age. Fresh and citrus fragrances are more volatile and should be used within 18 months of opening.
