Sandalwood: Meditation in a Bottle
Warm, creamy, and spiritually resonant — sandalwood's story spans thousands of years and five continents.
## A Sacred Wood
Sandalwood has been used in religious ceremony, traditional medicine, and personal fragrance across India, China, Japan, Egypt, and the Middle East for more than 4,000 years. It is burned as incense in Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic traditions. It is applied to the body in Ayurvedic practice. It is carved into sacred objects.
Few materials in human history have been so consistently and broadly revered.
## Why It Smells the Way It Does
The characteristic warm, creamy, woody sweetness of sandalwood comes primarily from a group of sesquiterpene alcohols called santalols. These large, heavy molecules are why sandalwood has such extraordinary longevity — they evaporate slowly and linger on skin for hours.
## The Different Sandalwoods
**Mysore Sandalwood (*Santalum album*)** — The most prized. Dense, creamy, sweet, with almost milky warmth. Now extremely rare due to overharvesting and protected by Indian government regulation. Genuine Mysore sandalwood oil commands extraordinary prices.
**Australian Sandalwood (*Santalum spicatum*)** — Drier and slightly earthier than Mysore, but sustainably farmed and widely used in modern perfumery. High quality.
**New Caledonian Sandalwood (*Santalum austrocaledonicum*)** — A sustainable alternative with excellent creaminess.
**Synthetic Sandalwood** — Molecules like Javanol, Sandalore, and Iso E Super replicate sandalwood facets. Sophisticated and beautiful in their own right — used in most contemporary fragrances.
## In Perfumery
Sandalwood is one of the great base notes: a fixative, a bridge between heavier and lighter ingredients, and a signature of warmth and sensuality. It makes florals softer, citrus notes deeper, and woody accords richer.
## Wearing Sandalwood
Sandalwood-dominant fragrances feel like calm confidence. They are skin scents — intimate, warm, discovered at close range. Perfect for evenings, meditation, and any moment when you want to feel centred.
