## The Mystery of Skin Chemistry
You spray the same perfume as a friend. On them, it is soft and powdery. On you, it is sharp and almost green. Neither of you is wrong — your skin is transforming the same ingredients differently.

## What Skin Chemistry Actually Is
Your skin's pH, sebum production, moisture level, and even your microbiome all influence how fragrance molecules behave. Some molecules bind to skin proteins and are amplified; others react with the skin's natural acids and are altered.
## pH and Fragrance
Slightly acidic skin (pH 4.5–5.5) is normal and healthy. More acidic skin tends to cut through citrus notes faster and mute sweet ingredients. More alkaline skin (uncommon but possible) can intensify certain musk and amber notes.
## Sebum and Longevity
Oilier skin holds fragrance longer and projects better. The sebum acts as a carrier that slowly releases fragrance molecules throughout the day. Drier skin absorbs fragrance faster and reduces both longevity and sillage.
**Solution for dry skin:** Apply an unscented moisturiser before your fragrance. The moisture creates a base that extends the life of the scent significantly.
## Diet and Fragrance
Your diet affects your skin's chemistry and therefore how fragrance smells on you. Strong-smelling foods — garlic, onion, certain spices — can subtly alter how a fragrance develops in the first hour after application.
## Testing a Fragrance Properly
Always test on your skin, not a paper strip. Allow 20–30 minutes for the top notes to settle before making a judgement. What you smell on paper is not what you will wear.
