The Art of Applying Fragrance: Everything You're Doing Wrong
Rubbing your wrists together. Spraying in the air and walking through it. Here's what actually works — and why.
## The Wrist Rub
Stop. Rubbing your wrists together after applying fragrance is one of the most common fragrance habits — and one of the most damaging. The friction generates heat and physically breaks fragrance molecules apart, destroying the delicate balance the perfumer constructed. You will lose top notes immediately and alter the character of what remains.
Simply apply and let the fragrance settle on its own.
## Spray in the Air and Walk Through
This wastes most of the fragrance on the floor and your clothes at the least effective concentration. The fragrance that lands on your hair and lower garments will not project as intended.
## Where to Actually Apply
**Pulse points** — Where blood vessels sit close to the skin, generating warmth that diffuses fragrance upward and outward. The inner wrists, neck (sides and nape), inner elbows, behind the knees.
**The chest** — Arguably the best single application point. Fragrance rises with body heat and reaches the nose of anyone close to you, while also creating a personal cloud you experience yourself.
**Hair** — Hair holds fragrance beautifully and releases it slowly for hours. The caveat: alcohol in perfume can dry hair with repeated use. A light spray on a brush, then running through the hair, is more careful.
## How Much to Apply
For an Eau de Parfum: 2–4 sprays. For a Parfum: 1–2 dabs. More is almost never better — fragrance should be discovered, not announced from across the room.
## The Timing
Apply fragrance to clean, moisturised skin before getting dressed. Allowing it to settle for 5 minutes before putting on clothes avoids staining and allows the top notes to pass before the fragrance is trapped under fabric.
## Layering for Longevity
Apply an unscented body moisturiser first. The hydrated skin holds fragrance significantly longer — sometimes doubling the longevity of a lighter Eau de Toilette.
