EdT, EdP, Parfum: Understanding Fragrance Concentration
The letters on your bottle are not just marketing — they determine how a fragrance smells, how long it lasts, and how much you need.
## What Concentration Actually Means
All perfume is a mixture of aromatic compounds dissolved in alcohol. The concentration refers to the percentage of those aromatic compounds relative to the alcohol and water carrier.
Higher concentration = more aromatic material = stronger, longer-lasting fragrance. But the relationship is not always linear — a very well-formulated Eau de Toilette can outperform a mediocre Parfum.
## Eau de Cologne (EdC): 2–4%
The lightest concentration. Refreshing and immediate but fades within 1–2 hours. Originally designed to be splashed liberally from a larger bottle. Classic citrus cologne formulas are among the most elegant in all of perfumery.
## Eau de Toilette (EdT): 5–15%
The most common concentration for fragrance. Balanced between projection and longevity — typically 3–5 hours of wear. The lighter character allows more faceted development across the three-note structure.
## Eau de Parfum (EdP): 15–20%
Richer, longer-lasting, and more immediate. The opening may be less bright than an EdT version of the same fragrance, but the heart and base will be more prominent and persistent. 6–8 hours of wear is typical.
## Parfum / Extrait (20–40%)
The most concentrated form. Often oil-based rather than alcohol-based. Applied in small amounts — a finger dab rather than a spray. Incredible longevity (12+ hours) and a richness unattainable at lower concentrations. The most expensive form.
## One Formula, Different Facets
A fragrance at different concentrations is not just a stronger or weaker version of itself — the character can change meaningfully. Top notes become less dominant; base notes emerge faster and more prominently. Try both when you can.
## Mondmorrea's Range
All Mondmorrea fragrances are offered as Eau de Parfum — the concentration we believe best balances projection, longevity, and the full expression of the formula.
